How to continue receiving Windows 10 updates after end of support

This guide explains how users can stay on Windows 10 and receive official updates even after support ends on October 14, 2025.

Problem

  • Upgrading to Windows 11 is not an option for many due to outdated hardware that doesn't meet the requirements.
  • Some users just don't like Windows 11 and prefer to stay on Windows 10 for as long as possible.

Solutions

Below are a few options to help you continue using Windows 10:

1. Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC

Microsoft offers two servicing channels for Windows:

  • GAC (General Availability Channel): Includes Home, Pro, and Enterprise editions. Support will end on October 14, 2025.
  • LTSC (Long-Term Servicing Channel): Includes Enterprise LTSC and IoT Enterprise LTSC versions, which have longer support lifecycles.

Here are the end of support deadlines:

  • Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021: Supported until January 12, 2027.
  • Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021: Supported until January 13, 2032.

What does it mean?

You can install Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021, the official edition of Windows 10 with extended support. This will allow you to receive security and system updates up to 2032.

How to upgrade Windows 10 Home, Pro, and other versions to Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021 while keeping files and apps

Follow the instructions below to upgrade:

1. Download the Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC ISO

  • Download the Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC ISO from the official source.
  • Make sure that the language and architecture of the downloaded image match the current version of Windows.

How to check the architecture and language of Windows:

  1. Architecture check:
    • Open PowerShell as an administrator.
    • Enter the command

Get-WmiObject -Class Win32_OperatingSystem | Format-List OSArchitecture

  • Result:
    • x64 means the 64-bit version.
    • x86 means the 32-bit version.

System Language Check:

  • Open PowerShell as an administrator.
  • Enter the command:

dism /english /online /get-intl | find /i "Default system UI language"

    • You will see the current language of the system, such as en-US or ru-RU.

2. Mount the ISO image

  1. Right-click on the downloaded ISO file.
  2. Select Open with > Windows Explorer.
  3. A new DVD drive will then appear in File Explorer, which means that the image has been successfully mounted.

3. Preparing the System for Upgrade

  1. Open Command Prompt as administrator.
  2. Enter the following command to change the system revision:

reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion" /v EditionID /d IoTEnterpriseS /f

4. Starting the Update Process

  1. Go to the mounted DVD drive in File Explorer.
  2. Run the file setup.exe.
  3. Follow the instructions of the installer until you reach the final confirmation screen.

Importantly:

  • Do not delay the steps at this point, otherwise the installer may not offer to save files and applications.
  • Make sure the last screen says "Save all files and apps."
  1. If everything is correct, start the installation process and wait for it to complete.

Windows will now be updated to Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021, while your files and apps will be preserved.
