How to find your BitLocker recovery key in Windows

 


Windows may request a BitLocker recovery key if it detects potential security threats, such as unauthorized access or attacks on the system drive. Recovery mode may also be activated due to frequent entry of the wrong PIN code or changes in the boot device in the BIOS.

If you can't find the recovery key to decrypt the drive, we'll tell you where to find it.


1. Check your Microsoft account

If you selected the option to encrypt your drive with BitLocker

  1. Follow the link: https://account.microsoft.com/devices/recoverykey.
  2. Sign in to your Microsoft account.
  3. Find the recovery key associated with your device.

This method works on any device (Windows, Mac, iOS, Android) and in any web browser.

If you have multiple Microsoft accounts, make sure you sign in to the one associated with the computer that requires unlocking. The recovery key will be displayed next to your PC's name or model number.

  2. Follow the on-screen instructions or enter the recovery key manually on the BitLocker recovery screen.

Check your cloud storage account

Your BitLocker recovery key can be stored in a cloud storage service, such as

  1. Sign in to your cloud storage account.
  2. Search for keywords such as:
    • «bitlocker»
    • «recovery key»
    • «recovery»

This will help you quickly find the file with the recovery key.

Check TXT or PDF files

  1. Pay attention to files with names that may contain a recovery key.
  2. Open documents with different titles—the key may be listed in their contents.

If no matching files are found:

  • Expand your search to include folders

Search for a printout or paper document

When you activated BitLocker, the system might have prompted you to print a recovery key.
